The frost cremation urn is a long, rounded ceramic urn which gets its name ‘Frost’ due to the icicle-like patterns formed at the bottom of the urn, gradually spreading to the top. The cold, light blue and white hues come together to create a strong frost, together with the figures within the frost which look like a birds-eye view of trees - along with the hints of soft green that are visible at the very top of the urn, the patterns symbolise a snowy winter that is slowly freezing over a woodland.
The Saggar firing technique makes use of Iron(III), otherwise known as Ferric Chloride, a compound commonly used in etching copper circuit boards and water treatment. Each clay urn is coated and wrapped in raw materials such as copper wire, steel wool, ferns, sugar, salt, and aluminium foil before firing to 1100°C.
The foil then traps the fumes created as the materials burn away, which imprint themselves into the surface of the clay. Because of this, each piece is completely one of a kind, never to be reproduced. This is, of course, a feature and one of the many beautiful aspects making this Saggar cremation urn a beautiful piece of décor.
